Who wants to run 42.2 km in minus 30 degree weather? According to Lawrence Conway, Winterman Race Director, plenty of runners are prepared to brace the cold and pound the pavement. February 2009 marked a new event on the calendars of serious runners as the nation’s capital hosted its first winter marathon.

Snowflake Kingdom in Gatineau is a playground of snow sculptures and ice slides. But the magic of the winter wonderland is not created from the wave of a wand. It takes workers weeks of moving, piling, forming and freezing snow before the public can swarm Ottawa and the surrounding area to enjoy one of Winterlude’s prime attractions.

Forgotten Sisters

Two aboriginal teenage girls went missing from Maniwaki, Quebec, in the fall of 2008. Maisy Odjick and Shannon Alexander, last seen September 6, are two of more than 500 missing or murdered aboriginal women in the Sisters in Spirit database, a initiative spearheaded by the Native Women’s Association of Canada. This short documentary looks at the struggle of one woman, Maisy’s mom, to bring attention to the disappearances.

The Koerners learnt their unborn child had Down syndrome after undergoing amniocentesis, a prenatal test to diagnose chromosomal abnormalities and fetal infections. A new maternal blood test from Stanford University is a less risky way to test for fetal abnormalities. Wide-spread prevalence of the test would make expecting parents aware of health factors affecting the fetus. Advocates for people with Down syndrome are worried that the easier test method will not be paired with balanced information on the realities of raising a child with Down syndrome.
